For her 100th birthday, Gloria Dempsey raised funds so kids at Boston Children’s can celebrate more birthdays of their own.
It was an idea rooted in nearly a century of gratitude. Long before Gloria spent this remarkable birthday surrounded by family and friends, she was a little girl in need of care.
A childhood search for answers
Gloria had walked with a limp since she was about 18 months old, and her mother spent years looking for answers. When Gloria was 9, her family learned about a doctor at Boston Children’s who specialized in orthopedic care. They came to the hospital hoping he could help.
At Boston Children’s, Gloria underwent two operations for a longstanding hip problem and spent months recovering in a body cast.
A gift she never forgot
Even now, Gloria remembers what it felt like to be in the hospital.
What Boston Children’s did for me felt like a gift. That’s why I wanted my birthday to help children there today.

She remembers the kindness of the doctors and nurses. She remembers how hard her mother worked to find help for her. And she remembers the heartbreak of being separated from the people she loved most. In those days, family visits were limited.
With six siblings at home and a close-knit family, she found that distance was especially painful. Gloria missed her older sister Mary most of all. Mary was like a second mother to her.
Gloria’s earliest memories are filled with warmth. She grew up in a family that had very little, but found joy in small things. Illness took Gloria away from that world for a time. But the care at Boston Children’s was unforgettable.
“The hospital was very, very good to me,” she says.

Helping kids feel at home
That memory stayed with her through the decades. And when her 100th birthday approached, Gloria knew exactly how she wanted to celebrate. She asked family and friends to support Boston Children’s Child Life Services to help bring comfort to children in the hospital.
“When you’re a kid in the hospital, it’s hard to adjust,” Gloria says. “Activities give you something to look forward to when you’re missing home.”
Today, hospital life looks different in many ways. Families can be more present, and Child Life Services helps children cope through play, creativity, preparation, and support.
Gloria is grateful for that progress.
Decades after Boston Children’s cared for her, Gloria turned her birthday into something bigger: a celebration of the milestones still ahead for children today.
A first birthday. A 10th birthday. A graduation. A life filled with possibility.
That is what makes Gloria’s story so special. Her generosity is not only a reflection of where she has been, but of what she hopes for others.
One hundred years marks an extraordinary life, but Gloria’s legacy outshines any number. It lives in her compassion for children she may never meet. It lives in her belief that care should comfort the whole child, not just treat an illness. And it lives in her beautiful birthday wish: that more children will have the chance to grow up, feel better, and keep reaching new milestones.
