Rob and Karen Hale have made a remarkable commitment of $100 million to Boston Children’s, the largest philanthropic gift in our hospital’s history, enabling our leaders to reimagine how mental and behavioral health care is delivered to children and families. This gift will name a signature building in Brighton on the campus of Franciscan Children’s, which became part of the Boston Children’s health system in 2023.
“Boston Children’s is the best in the world, and that’s what’s needed to turn the tide on mental health for kids everywhere,” says Rob Hale. “We are proud to stand with Boston Children’s in this critical moment so all children and families can feel supported, understood, and hopeful about the future,” said Karen Hale.
The couple’s visionary leadership extends beyond a name. Their exceptional generosity will help Boston Children’s set the new standard for pediatric behavioral health—bringing together critical research, prevention, treatment, community support, and a state-of-the-art facility. Just as importantly, it will drive a shift in the way people think about emotional well-being, making it a fundamental part of the care families expect and deserve. Its impact will be felt for generations.
“This gift is nothing short of transformational,” says Kevin B. Churchwell, MD, CEO, Boston Children’s Hospital. “It reflects extraordinary compassion and a shared belief that every child deserves not only physical health but also mental wellness.”
Our Brighton campus is central to our joint vision. Here, fueled by the Hale’s partnership, Boston Children’s will seamlessly integrate mental health into every aspect of childhood care through:
- expanded inpatient and outpatient behavioral health and rehabilitation services.
- groundbreaking research that informs understanding of the complex roots of behavioral health challenges.
- robust clinician training and strengthened community partnerships.
Years from now, when a child finds joy again, when a parent feels optimism where there was only fear, when a young person discovers they are not defined by their diagnosis—the Hales’ generosity will be part of that story. We’re humbled to thank Rob and Karen for believing in a future where every child’s mental health matters and for helping make that future real.
