Jackson Finds His Voice

Jackson’s family knew something wasn’t right. He had been born premature and at age 2, he still didn’t respond to his name or play with other kids. His language and motor skills were delayed. His family searched for answers.

At Boston Children’s, they finally found them. Here, experts diagnosed Jackson with autism—giving his family a path forward.

Jackson’s care team worked to understand how he experiences the world and help him communicate within it. In Boston Children’s Autism Language Program and our Augmentative Communication Program, he was introduced to an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device—a tablet that lets kids use pictures, symbols or words to express themselves.

The device changed everything. “It gave him a voice,” said Jackson’s mom, Mindy.

For the first time, Jackson could reliably tell others what he needed, how he felt or when something hurt. This reduced his frustration and anxiety, and helped him handle new situations.

As Jackson grew, more health challenges emerged. Eating often caused him pain. Doctors found he had severe gastrointestinal disorders. He needed feeding tubes, surgeries and hospital stays. But thanks to his AAC device, Jackson could explain how he was feeling—giving his care team vital information to improve his treatment and comfort.

Today, several Boston Children’s departments work together to manage Jackson’s complex medical needs. His family also finds comfort in Boston Children’s support services—from kind social workers and peaceful garden spaces to snacks and smiles at the Hale Family Center for Families. “They take care of all of us,” said Mindy.

Now 7, Jackson is joyful and affectionate. He loves trampolines, the outdoors, and spending time with friends. His mom credits his progress to the team at Boston Children’s.

“The incredible doctors, nurses, specialists and therapists there have such deep care and determination to help children,” said Mindy. “They give kids like Jackson the chance to live full and rewarding lives.”
