Did you know injury is the number one cause of death and disability among children in the United States? Fundacìon MAPFRE and Boston Children’s have launched a five-year expansion of our Injury Prevention Program. Our shared goal: to reduce and prevent injuries endured by children and teenagers. The centerpiece of the program: an injury prevention van that reaches neighborhoods and schools throughout New England.
The Injury Prevention Program is a comprehensive outreach initiative led by the Hospital’s Trauma Center under the leadership of David Mooney MD, MPH. The goal is to prevent and reduce the number and severity of injuries endured by children and adolescents in Boston and its nearby communities through the use of education, advocacy and research. The program takes a proactive approach to educating families by delivering information and providing safety devices as well as training medical providers with in person educational opportunities.
Our Injury Prevention Program outreach ranges from face-to-face education with children and families to leadership in national organizations. We work with parents to correctly install approved car seats and child-proof their homes, teach kids to wear bike helmets, share best practices with colleagues around the country, and advocate for laws to keep young drivers safer. Be sure to look for the injury prevention van as it travels the roads of Massachusetts spreading the message that “safe play starts here”.
