Massachusetts and New Hampshire Wal-Mart and Sam's Club Stores Raise $270,000 for Boston Children's Hospital
Boston, MA (July 15, 2009)- Local Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores joined a nationwide campaign to raise funds for Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), an international non-profit that raises funds for 170 children’s hospitals in the United States. Money raised through CMN in Massachusetts and New Hampshire supports patient care, research, medical training and community health initiatives at Boston Children's Hospital. Sixty-three Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club locations in the Boston market raised nearly $270,000 for Boston Children's Hospital.
Top local Massachusetts and New Hampshire Wal-Mart stores include:
- North Oxford, MA: $30,990 (the 4th highest fundraising Wal-Mart store nationwide)
- Whitinsville, MA: $21,304
- Epping, NH: $14,845
- Leicester, MA: $14,108
During the six-week campaign, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club associates, customers and members were invited to make a donation to their local CMN hospital at the register. Additional in-store fundraisers such as bake sales and pot luck lunches were held to bolster fundraising efforts.
For the first time, a “virtual balloon” allowed customers to make a $1, $2, $5 donation, or a donation in an open amount, upon checkout. The change from paper balloons to the virtual balloon model supports Wal-Mart’s core value of sustainability, according to Margaret McKenna, president of the Wal-Mart Foundation.
“We’re grateful that Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club associates and customers have become such important partners in our mission to serve the thousands of families who visit us for life-saving care,” said Carola Cadley, Boston Children’s Hospital Trust Associate Vice President, Corporate Development and Marketing. “Every dollar raised strengthens our ability to care for kids.”
“Our annual fundraising campaign allows for customers to donate directly to their local Children's Miracle Network hospital, providing much-needed funding to sick and injured children,” said McKenna. “We are proud of our associates who have embraced Children's Miracle Network as an important cause, and stepped up their efforts to raise $15 million.”
The retailer’s support for Children’s Miracle Network began in 1987. Since then, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club associates, customers and members have raised more than $460 million for Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.
