After a 30-year quest to find a way to repair torn ACL’s, Martha Murray, engineering student turned MD, developed bridge-enhanced ACL repair (BEAR).
Up to 80 percent of people who have their ACLs removed develop arthritis 15-20 years later. Instead, BEAR uses stitches and a bridging scaffold to stimulate the ACL to heal. Now in clinical trials, BEAR offers the chance to stay active through adulthood.
When our team first landed in Ghana in 2008, local clinicians had never seen open-heart surgery in children. Through eight medical missions, Boston Children’s clinicians shared life-saving expertise.
Today Ghanaian surgeons are performing cardiac surgeries on their own and recently opened a six-bed pediatric intensive care unit.
