Frogs to Philanthropy

The ice cream truck at Sean Foley’s birthday party was a big hit—and so was the $400 his guests gave to Children’s.

Sean Foley spent last summer doing what many young boys do--riding his bike, swimming, and catching frogs in the backyard. But on July 25, his seventh birthday, he did something different. He passed up presents and asked his guests to donate to Children’s Hospital Boston instead.

According to his mother, Peg Foley, “Sean didn’t think twice. He was happy to donate to the hospital.”

The Foleys had always given a little here and there to the hospital, donating during the telethons and radiothons. Their own good fortune had motivated them to help the families of Children’s.

“Our kids have everything they want, and we all have our health.” Peg explained, “It seemed like the right thing to do.”

Sean’s party was like a carnival, with a “bouncy house” and an ice cream truck. Friends from school and around the neighborhood joined in the celebration. Unlike other first-grade birthday parties, there wasn’t wrapping paper and new toys to pick up when it was all over—there was a gift totaling $400 for Children’s patients.

Sean is some 7-year-old!
